“The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.” C.G.Jung
It’s a simple image, really. Waves crashing against the rugged wood beams of a pier in Newport Beach as they do day after day before my feet ever touched this water. But this image is to me, so much more. When I took a walk on the beach that brisk January day, I was alone and free in playful meditation, and these waves seemed to celebrate in that dance. So much of what I do for my clients is birthed out of that creative energy that makes me feel alive. It helps me rejoice in their individuality, appreciate their chemistry, and celebrate their courage to be themselves as I view them through my lens. Sometimes though, I get caught up in the day by day challenges of running my business. I grow restless when I do not allow myself to dabble playfully in life. And it’s out of that necessity to create that I remember moments like these that help me play, whether shooting or editing or doing taxes. Then I can pour my soul into my art for myself and to serve those around me.
