Megha & Cameron | Chicago, IL | Hindu Wedding Ceremony

    Saturday, January 15th, 2011

I don’t know if it was Megha’s beauty and her sparkling laughter that first caught Cameron’s eye, or if it was her incredible balance between a fierce determination and extraordinary kindness. And it’s hard to say whether it was the way Cameron could always make her laugh or if it was his genuineness and honesty that initially drew Megha to him. But when they began studying together virtually every day, it didn’t take long for the two to realize these were only a few among the many qualities they valued in one another. They decided to move their dates beyond the library walls, and soon Megha was being schooled in the ways of beer pong while Cameron was broadening his palate to include Indian and Thai cuisine. That summer their relationship stood through the test of Cameron’s long hours at his new job. He said he’ll never forget the day Megha was helping him move out of his old apartment, and his buddy looked over at him and said, “Cameron, she’s a keeper.” He knew he had truly found a special connection in Megha. Six years later Cameron asked Megha’s father for his blessing, and that same weekend she said yes.

It only takes a few minutes with them to see how strong their adoration for one another is. Coming from two entirely different backgrounds has only served to strengthen their devotion, and it was moving to see their two families embrace one another wholeheartedly. Megha and Cameron exchanged their sacred vows in a beautiful Hindu ceremony among their family members here in Chicago. Their wedding was decked in luxurious shades of red and gold and the elaborate details I so love to photograph! It has seriously been one of my favorite weddings to date.

I’m grateful to have had Jaclyn Simpson shooting with me once again. She was a blast to work with and came away with some incredible shots like the one below.

Megha, of course, looked stunning. While she is an obvious beauty as she gazing at you directly, my favorite image of her is when I caught her off guard, all the way to the right.

Cameron looked equally as handsome and distinguished.

Megha and Cameron, thank you for inviting me to be a part of your day, and even more, into your lives. I am so thankful to know you both. Sending you much love!! xo

A Bridal Affair | Gallery 1028 | Chicago Wedding Venue

    Monday, December 20th, 2010

I love that December brings so many delightful industry holiday parties and opportunities for brides to see the latest trends, sample some of Chicago’s finest catering and see some of the city’s most beautiful venues. Gallery 1028 is a favorite of mine, with it’s vintage hardwoods, exposed brick and grand beams throughout the alternative venue space. When they hosted their Bridal Affair this month, I couldn’t resist but snap a few shots of the gorgeously candlelit room before the guests entered!

Jessie & Eric | Warren Woods, Michigan | 5 Year Anniversary & Vow Renewal

    Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Just five years ago on a southern plantation in Alabama, two hearts were joined in unending love under a pecan tree as Jessie and Eric exchanged vows among their friends and family.  Their lives have been a whirlwind of change since that August day, but the journey has brought them closer and made them stronger.

Jessie and Eric are so much of what I admire.  I can hardly believe I only just met them.  Already I am so grateful for their friendship and their influence in my life. They are both refreshingly witty, hilariously fun, and ceaselessly supportive.  Fellow photographers, Jessie and Eric Stevens (of Simply Jessie Photography) are such an incredible example of what a true partnership is- not only in business, but in their marriage. Their love is deeply inspiring and so very real. And their talent astounds me.  So when I heard they were planning a vow renewal ceremony in the woods of Michigan, I was both excited AND nervous to be shooting with Jaclyn Simpson to capture their special ceremony.

Mosquitoes swarmed, cicadas buzzed and the air was thick with summer’s humidity, but nothing could detract from the tender moments Jessie and Eric shared. They stood under a canopy of trees, styled by Kelly of Fleur with ribbon, lace and twine, as they renewed the vows they had spoken to one another five years ago.  “I promise to love you, honor you, comfort you…I promise to pray for you and pray with you, to live with you in an understanding way, to grant you honor…” were among some of the powerful words they read from the beautiful stationery created for them by Suzy of Lily Red Design.  Jessie’s bouquet was made with cotton (to remind them of their wedding day), thistle (from the song she walked down the aisle to), rosemary, oak leaf hydrangea, acorns and billy balls and finished delicately with twine, for that’s how Eric had proposed.  Kelly spared nothing in gorgeously crafting their arrangements to be abundant with symbolism…just one of the many reasons I ADORE her work. A few personal touches of their own- the Persian rug that was given as a wedding gift from Jessie’s parents, a basket with their wedding album and mementos from the last five years, and a ceramic jar with thoughtful sayings to one another- added even more significance to their ceremony.  And to work with Jaclyn again? I couldn’t have asked for more! Jaclyn is one of the people I most love shooting with because she is so sensitive to the dynamics of each couple, amazingly creative, and truly just so much fun to be around. She brilliantly captured the essence of their vow renewal and I was thrilled to romp around with her, Jessie, Eric and Kelly through the fields of Michigan.  As much as I love city life, there is something so rejuvenating about the countryside!  After enjoying some of the glowy evening light, Jessie and Eric continued their celebration with a small picnic- their favorite wine and beer, small sandwiches of tomato, basil and mozzarella, and decadent pecan tarts.  Suzy’s menus and a few other paper pieces beautifully accented their treats.

Jessie looked simply stunning in her slate and silver dress. A friend of hers made a custom hairpiece to suit the occasion.

And Eric was quite strapping in his rolled khakis with suspenders and a boutonniere of billy balls and cotton, courtesy of Kelly.

Jessie and Eric, thank you so very much for allowing me to be a part of your anniversary celebration.  I feel so very honored. I have nothing but love and respect for you both, and wish you many more years of love and learning!! It was a blessing to collaborate once again with Jaclyn and Kelly and to photograph Suzy’s work for the first time. We are thrilled that Eric and Jessie’s picnic and vow renewal was recently featured by Ami Price of the inspirational wedding site, Elizabeth Anne Designs. She told their story beautifully and went all out with the photos!  Also be sure to check out the phenomenal posts by the rest of the crew, including Jessie, herself!

Lori & Mike | Siesta Key, Florida | Florida Beach Destination Wedding

    Monday, October 18th, 2010

I’ve been quite fortunate this year to dip my toes in oceans all over the world this year while photographing love stories and spending time with old and new friends.  While I still have many images to share from this summer’s journeys, I couldn’t help but show a preview of Lori and Mike’s delightful Sarasota wedding.  They tied the knot just a little over a week ago on the white sands of Siesta Key beach surrounded by their closest friends and family.  Their day couldn’t have been more perfect, and I am so blessed to have been able to experience it with them.  I look forward to sharing more of their story with you, but here is a quick peek at their celebration!

Even the bluest sky was no match for Lori’s fiercely beautiful blue eyes. And Mike looked as suave as ever in his linen dress shirt and pants.

Lori and Mike spent the week following their wedding in sunny Jamaica for their honeymoon before returning to Rochester, NY. So glad to have these two in my life! Wishing much love, light and joy to you guys!!

Michelle & Mark | Hickory Ridge Country Club | Rochester, NY Wedding

    Thursday, October 14th, 2010

When Mark and Michelle invited me to be a part of their wedding day, I was thrilled.  It was just over a year ago that I met Mark while photographing Craig and Stephanie Rapp‘s Glen Iris wedding, who have since become dear friends. As we all sat talking over a campfire after the reception, I’ll never forget how Mark beamed when he mentioned Michelle’s name and spoke of their future together. I couldn’t wait to meet the woman who had had such a profound effect on him. Michelle and I finally met months later, and she was everything Mark had described. Petite, kind, beautiful, and bubbling with cheerfulness. She is one of those people that you meet and instantly feel like you’ve known her for much longer. For Mark, he had known her for a large portion of his life, and as the years passed, he could not get her out of his mind. The two had become friends in 6th grade and even dated briefly in high school. They went their separate ways in college, but kept in touch during that time. I can’t help but wonder how many times their junior prom song played over again in their heads as they both reminisced of holding each other tight on the dance floor. That love that had blossomed so young had taken root in their hearts, and only a week after Michelle finished college, the two started dating again. They have been together ever since. As Michelle told their story, she could not stop smiling as she gushed about Mark.

It was no different when I returned to Rochester, NY to photograph their wedding in July.  Even when I asked Michelle for a serious face for one picture, she couldn’t keep that radiant smile off her pretty face.  And after all, why should she?  It was finally their day.  It was such a delight to be back in Rochester for a few days to catch up with friends and shoot the Steiner’s wedding.   From pre-service beers in the garage to reception champagne on the dance floor, every moment with the bridal party was a blast.  I am especially thankful to have had my good friend, Michael Hanlon, shooting with me. He is one of the most talented photographers I have worked with in Rochester, and it was such an honor to shoot side by side with him. Here are just a few of the many images we captured this weekend.

Two of my favorite images, below, were taken by Mike. Love the expressions on Mark’s parents faces as the ring bearer runs down the aisle!

Couldn’t resist posting these snapshots of some of my favorite people looking fabulous!!

Pat & Jessie, Steph & Craig, and Elisa & Jared

These guys are so fun!! They rocked the rest of the evening away on the dance floor. Thanks so much Michelle and Mark for having us! xoxo

Dharna & Samir | Naperville, Illinois | Hindu Wedding Ceremony

    Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

I simply adore Indian weddings. The colorful saris and ceremonial details, the smells of masala, curry, and turmeric wafting through the air, the hypnotic sounds of the drums and unique Indian melodies and the ladies voices singing in unison- everything about it evokes within me such a deep awe and appreciation for their rich cultural celebration.  As a photographer, it is a visual feast of colors and textures. As an artist who is moved deeply by emotion, it is one of the most fulfilling events to witness.  For in every aspect of the elaborate ceremonies, relationships are honored.  It is every much a celebration of the joining of two families as it is the union of the couple entering marriage. There is such an emphasis on relationships between parents and child, siblings, and in-laws and there is significant time spent observing these individuals.

I have the tremendous honor of having been invited to India to photograph a wedding tomorrow.  Spending time with Sarah and Chris’s family the last few days here in Kerala has been incredible, and after being a part of their prayer ceremony this evening, I am even more excited to see how their day unfolds.  As I spend time in my sweet little hotel room in Trivandrum preparing for tomorrow, I thought it appropriate to share an Indian wedding I assisted on at the end of May.

When Liesl of Liesl Diesel Photo asked me to join her in photographing Dharna & Samir’s wedding in Naperville, I was thrilled. I often marvel over how one small connection leads to another and precipitates an entire chain of events. Like the way Samir’s uncle wandered into the brokerage where Dharna worked, and was so captivated by her that he insisted she must meet his nephew.  Neither of them suspected the priceless relationship that would blossom out of taking a simple risk.  As I chatted with Dharna and her bridesmaids- girls she met through Samir that have since become her two closest friends, I was even struck by the the circumstances that transpired to allow me to be a part of their day. Years ago while still in college in Rochester, my love for photography was reawakened- and little did I know that down the road I’d meet Liesl, daughter of one of my professors at the time. So many random acquaintances have linked us since then, but it wasn’t until a few months back that we connected again in Chicago, where both of our paths have led us.  Liesl’s talent is inspiring and her humor contagious, and I enjoyed every moment working with her!! I feel so very fortunate to have joined her in capturing Dharna and Samir’s celebration in Naperville.

Dharna, of course, was absolutely breathtaking. Perhaps one of my favorite Indian wedding traditions is the art of Mehendi, the adorning of hands and feet with henna.  Within the intricately designed patterns, Samir’s name is hidden. It is said that the groom must find his name in the bride’s decorated hands before the wedding to symbolize the strength of their commitment.

Dharna and Samir opted for doing a “first look,” to spend some time together before the ceremony and have a few pictures taken. It is always so moving to witness their first interaction when a couple starts their wedding day by setting aside a few moments to be together and reflect on the significance of their union. Afterwards, Samir met up with his friends and family for the Baraat. This is a time of celebration and blessings.  Samir could not stop smiling in anticipation to meet Dharna again for the mandap ceremony!

Dharna’s mother was so overcome with emotion, that I was almost moved to tears. The Indian Vidaai is the symbolic wishing farewell to the new couple, and there were many more tears, hugs, and laughter following the ceremony.

After the vidaai, Dharna and Samir changed to get ready for the party!!

Liesl and I had a blast at their lively and rowdy Bollywood style reception! (We may have even danced a little.) We also had the pleasure of working with Rogie Cruz from RAC Visual Imaging. Thanks so much Dharna and Samir for allowing us to share your day!

Chicago Trash the Dress | Winter Shoot in Sugar Grove

    Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

It was a chilly Chicago day, but that didn’t stop 9 photographers, three models, two make-up artists and a troupe of assistants from venturing out to Sugar Grove, Illinois on Sunday for a Winter Trash the Dress Session. Trash the Dress? What’s that all about? Among the shifts that wedding photography has made over the past few years is an emphasis on bridal portraiture as a means of celebrating a bride’s beauty through a session dedicated solely to her in her wedding dress.  Trash the Dress takes that a step further! A bride’s wedding dress is, arguably, the most important detail of her day. She’s spent months looking through bridal magazines, traipsing across town with her friends, and shopping at boutiques, and when the decision is made, this is the one thing on which she spares no expense. To wear it for one day. Albeit the most important day of her life. Hopefully she has hired a photographer who is every bit as passionate about her gown as she is, and who will dedicate plenty of time to capturing her in her radiance, alone and with her groom. Even still, I have so many brides who are just dying to push the envelope and go down to the beach or out to the barn, but are concerned about getting their dresses dirty before the reception. This is why I love Trash the Dress. We schedule a secondary session after her wedding, and then we have some real fun! The stress of keeping things running smoothly at the wedding has passed. The bride can get all dolled up again if she wishes, or opt for a more casual hairstyle as well. Sometimes her man joins in (I love when they do!), and we have a Day After Session that focuses on the couple.  And this is where it’s time to let loose!  It’s another opportunity to capture the essence of who the bride (or couple) truly is, in an environment that most suits her. It can be a carefree, spontaneous time of silliness, or it can be a glam high-fashion shoot.  From jumping in the leaves, to going to the beach, to horse-back riding, to walking around in an urban area, the possibilities are endless.  And while we do say “trash” the dress, we don’t (necessarily) mean ripping it to shreds or destroying it completely. But the bride can rest assured if she gets it muddy or wet- thank goodness for dry cleaning!  When all is said and done, it’s an opportunity for artist and client to continue building their relationship and to create some truly powerful images to celebrate a couple’s commitment.

Chicago’s Melissa Diep has a vision to give all photographers an opportunity to start offering this to their clients. Last summer she started organizing Trash the Dress sessions at killer venues across Chicago as an outlet for photographers to connect, practice lighting and posing, and build their portfolios.  She hires stunning models and talented hair and make-up artists for each shoot.  But even more noteworthy is Melissa’s dedication to finding exquisite dresses for each shoot. She almost never uses a dress more than once, and gets them custom made from various places in Chicago and even internationally.

This was my first Trash the Dress with Melissa, and it did not disappoint! We arrived at the venue in Sugar Grove, a beaten path just off the main highway leading to an old house, a barn, a silo, and boundless ideas.  The dresses were flawless, the models were stunning, and their hair and makeup was meticulously styled by the artists to match the mood each model portrayed. Melissa even collaborated with The Left Bank to acquire some ravishing jewelry and headpieces. Amidst the winter chill, the models were gracious and fun while we, as photographers, feasted in this playground of textures and light.  Not only did I take away some incredible images, but I left with a unique experience that allowed me to play with lighting and posing to a degree I’m not always at liberty to on a shoot.  It was empowering to construct and compose my own shots as well as learn from the other photographers present. We even collaborated on a few concepts with impressive results. I am so thrilled to have been a part of the Chicago Winter Trash the Dress.

Thank you Melissa for organizing another successful event!  And many thanks to our gorgeous models Jennifer, Nicole, and Adrianna and our brilliant make-up artists Diem Angie-Nguyen and Maryam Subhani.
